'U' Hits Road for Ohio State Series

2/13/2019 11:12:00 AM | Men's Hockey

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Gopher Hockey program closes out a four-game road trip with a two-game series at No. 2/3 Ohio State this weekend in Columbus, Ohio. Both games in the Friday/Saturday series at scheduled for 5 p.m. CT with the games available on Big Ten Network, BTN2Go, KTLK AM 1130 and FM 103.5.

Against Ohio State
Minnesota enters this weekend's Big Ten series with Ohio State with a 27-7-4 all-time record against the Buckeyes and a 7-4-1 record on the road against the conference frontrunners. The Big Ten foes split a pair of 2-2 overtime ties earlier this season at 3M Arena at Mariucci, making Ohio State the only conference team that the Gophers have not lost to this season. Senior forward Tyler Sheehy has 23 points (10 goals, 13 assists) in 15 games against the Buckeyes as Minnesota's active leading scorer against this weekend's opponent. Eric Schierhorn is 7-3-0 in 10 career games against Ohio State while Mat Robson is 1-1-3 in five career games.

The Pitlick Production
Junior forward Rem Pitlick extended his career-best scoring streak to 11 games last weekend and has now recorded points in 19 of the last 20 games for Minnesota. The Nashville Predators prospect is just two points shy of his 100th career point and has found the scoresheet in 24 of Minnesota's 29 games this year (he has not been held without a point in back-to-back games this season). Pitlick's team-leading 17 goals rank first in the Big Ten and tied for fourth in the nation while his team-high 35 points are tied for seventh in the nation (both statistics are single-season career highs for the junior).

Sheehy Continues to Climb Record Book
Tyler Sheehy scored both goals on Friday for the Gophers and currently ranks second among active NCAA skaters with 142 points (54 goals, 88 assists) in 140 career games -- only Ohio State's Mason Jobst has more career points that the Gophers captain. The Hobey Baker Award nominee is now tied for 34th all-time in scoring at Minnesota with Neal Broten (Jordan Leopold is next on the list at 144 points). Twenty nine of Sheehy's 34 points this year have come in Big Ten play (he ranks third nationally in conference points) as the senior also is tied for the national lead with 21 power-play points this year.

Gopher Hockey Notes and Anecdotes
Sophomore forward Brannon McManus saw his career-long scoring streak snapped on Saturday at nine games -- McManus' 11 goals, 10 assists and 21 points are all single-season career highs...Saturdays' loss at Penn State was just the second time in the last 20 games that Tyler Sheehy did not record a point...sophomore defenseman Clayton Phillips picked up two assists on Saturday for his second career multi-point performance.

Alumni Notes and Anecdotes
All-American alum Nick Bjugstad skated in his 400th career NHL game on Monday night, scoring the game-winning goal for the Pittsburgh Penguins after being traded earlier this month.

Special Teams Play
Minnesota leads the Big Ten in both power play (.267, 28-for-105, fifth in the nation) and penalty kill (.836, 92-for-110) this season while the Gophers also boast the fourth-best combined special teams in the country at .558 (120-for-215). Saturday's loss snapped a streak of eight-straight games for the Maroon & Gold with a power-play goal.

Gophers Honor 1979 Team with 3MAM Record
Saturday. Jan. 26, 2019 was a night to celebrate for two reasons including the 40th anniversary celebration of the University of Minnesota's 1979 national championship squad. With members of the team being honored throughout the game, the Gophers set a new 3M Arena at Mariucci attendance record at 10,686. The crowd topped a 14-year old facility record of 10,587 fans from another Border Battle matchup between Minnesota and Wisconsin on Nov. 6, 2004.

Hobey Baker Fan Voting
Rem Pitlick, Mat Robson and Tyler Sheehy will represent the Gophers on this year's Hobey Baker Award fan ballot as voting opened last week for college hockey's top honor. Fans can vote online at HobeyBaker.com through Sunday, March 10. The Gophers have previously won four Hobey Baker Awards (Neal Broten, Robb Stauber, Brian Bonin and Jordan Leopold).

Success in the Classroom
The spring semester starts last month (Jan. 22) at Minnesota, but the fall semester was unforgettable as the Gophers recorded the highest semester GPA in program history at 3.41 and the highest cumulative GPA in program history at 3.22. As an athletic department, Minnesota followed suit with school records of 3.25 cumulative GPA and a 3.25 semester GPA.

Schierhorn Nears School Record
Senior goaltender Eric Schierhorn (2-4-0) picked up his 12th career shutout earlier as the two-time Big Ten Goaltender of the Year claimed sole possession of third all-time at Minnesota (only Adam Wilcox and Kellen Briggs have more with 13 each). With a 57-45-4 career record, Schierhorn ranks tied for sixth in school history in wins and fifth in saves at 2,678. Schierhorn has made 110 all-time appearances for the Maroon & Gold, fourth in program history behind only Adam Hauser (151), Kellen Briggs (132) and Adam Wilcox (115).

Minnesota Announces Captains for 2018-19
Four senior forwards will serve as leads for the University of Minnesota during the 2018-19 campaign with Tyler Sheehy and Brent Gates Jr. acting as captains for the Maroon & Gold while Jack Ramsey and Darian Romanko will act as assistant captains. Sheehy returns after serving as team captain as a junior last year while Gates, Ramsey and Romanko will wear letters for the first time as seniors. The four skaters continue a long tradition of Gopher Hockey captains dating back to the program's first season of play in 1921-22 when Chet Bros led the Maroon & Gold. Counting the new additions, 170 Gophers have worn a letter at the University of Minnesota in the program's 97-year history.

Gophers in the NHL Draft
Thirteen current Gophers have had their names called at the NHL Entry Draft including newcomers Robbie Stucker (2017, Columbus, Seventh Round, 210th), Sammy Walker (2017, Tampa Bay, Seventh Round, 200th), Blake McLaughlin (2018, Anaheim, Third Round, 79th) and Sampo Ranta (2018, Colorado, Third Round, 78th). Ranta and McLaughlin were selected with back-to-back picks in 2018 -- the sixth time in Gophers history that has happened. Ten NHL teams have prospects on the Gopher Hockey roster this year with Anaheim, Tampa Bay and Nashville each listing two draftees with Minnesota.

Mr. Hockey Goes to Minnesota
Incoming Gophers freshman Sammy Walker closed out his prep career by leading Edina High School to a third-place finish at the 2018 MSHSL Class AA State Tournament, earning all-tournament honors along with Star Tribune Metro Player of the Year accolades. Walker was also 34th recipient of the annual Mr. Hockey Award, given to the top senior high school boy's hockey player in the state of Minnesota. Of the 34 honorees in the award's history, 23 have gone on to play college hockey at the University of Minnesota.
