No. 25 Gophers Complete Weekend With Two Wins, Top Broncos 6-1

2/18/2019 8:30:00 AM | Men's Tennis

The No. 25 University of Minnesota Men's Tennis team defeated Western Michigan 6-1 Sunday, making them 9-1 to start the season.

"A nice weekend, two big wins over two good teams," head coach Geoff Young said. "I think We're playing well, but we need to get better at our overheads and putting those away against good teams. I thought our guys not on the court today were great, and that's going to help us in the future"

DOUBLES

The Gophers and the Broncos went toe-to-toe in the doubles competition, with Eli Ogilvy and Jackson Allen taking No. 2 doubles over Jack Randall and Lenhard Haupt 6-2, and Jannik Opitz and Kennosuke Nouchi taking down Josip Krstanovic and Justyn Levin 6-4 in No. 1 doubles. Krstanovic and Levin were handed their first home loss of the season as a doubles pairing.

Then, Stefan Milicevic and Marino Alpeza clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win in No. 3 doubles to give Minnesota a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.

SINGLES

Marino Alpeza continued his stretch of quick wins in the No. 4 spot with his 6-4, 6-2 win over Peter Kuszynski, while Eli Ogilvy won 6-2, 6-4 in No. 5 singles.

"It was a good match today. Jackson and I haven't been playing our best doubles as of late, but today we really stepped it up and carried that momentum into singles," Ogilvy said.

After Ogilvy's win, Josip Krstanovic took down Jannik Opitz 6-3, 7-6 in No. 1 singles to clinch the match for Minnesota, while Stefan Milicevic defeated Matej Svjetlicic 6-1, 6-4 in No. 2 singles. Vlad Lobak grinded to a 7-6, 6-3 win in No. 6 singles after being down 2-5, 0-30 in the seventh game of the first set. Western Michigan earned their lone point in No. 3 singles with Lenhard Haupt winning 6-4, 7-6 over Jackson Allen.

THE SPIN

Minnesota earned two tough wins over the weekend against Wichita State and Western Michigan, giving them much needed momentum heading into their bye week. With two full weeks to train, Minnesota will use their hard-earned rest to prepare for two final nonconference home duals, Washington and Drake, before hitting the road against Wisconsin to kick-off Big Ten play.
