No. 17 Gophers Breeze by Huskies 5-2
3/1/2019 8:07:00 PM | Men's Tennis
The No. 17 University of Minnesota Men's Tennis team defeated the Washington Huskies 5-2 to advance to 10-1 on the season, heading into their final non-conference dual of the season.
The Gophers are now 7-0 at home and are currently riding an eight game winning streak
"It was a good win against a good Washington team," head coach Geoff Young said. "We were really tested in doubles, but we were able to come out on top, which was good, because things could have gotten complicated at the end if we hadn't have earned the point."
DOUBLES
Washington gave Minnesota everything they could have wanted in doubles, with the Huskies taking in early lead in all three doubles pairings. After being down 3-4, Stefan Milicevic and Marino Alpeza climbed back to take No. 3 doubles 6-4. Then, Jackson Allen and Eli Ogilvy climbed back from a 3-5 deficit to take No. 2 doubles 7-5, while Josip Krstanovic and Justyn Levin were locked up 3-3 in the tiebreak in No. 1 doubles upon clinch.
SINGLES
Marino Alpeza continued his stron play in the No. 4 spot with another clean 6-4, 6-3 win, while Vlad Lobak won 7-6, 6-3 in No. 6 singles. Jackson Allen took No. 3 singles 6-4, 6-4 to clinch the match for Minnesota. With the match in hand, No. 38 Josip Krstanovic took the first set, but ultimately fell 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 to Enzo Sommer in No. 1 singles. Eli Ogilvy earned the final point for the Gophers with his 7-5, 1-6, 6-2 win in No. 5 singles before Stefan Milicevic fell 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in No. 2 singles
THE SPIN
After a hard fought doubles point, the Gophers got off to a hot start in singles, with all six competitors taking the first set. The Gophers cooled down, with three of the six being forced into a third set, and two top-of-the-lineup compositors eventually falling in three. While Washington is a major conference opponent, Minnesota will face much tougher competition in the Big Ten with Ohio State (1) , Illinois (11) and Michigan (14) all currently ranked above Minnesota (17) in the ITA/NCAA rankings. A strong bottom of the lineup will be key for Minnesota going forward, but the top of the lineup will have to channel their play from earlier in the season (like against Alabama and UCF) in order to compete with the cream of the crop. Luckily, with ranked wins already under the belt of Krstanovic, Milicevic and Allen this season, strong play should be no surprise.
