Maroon & Gold Sweep BYU in Boston

1/25/2020 1:35:00 PM | Men's Tennis

BOSTON, Mass. - Gopher men's tennis came away with a 7-0 victory over Brigham Young University Saturday morning in Boston in what was the first of two matches the Maroon & Gold are scheduled to play this weekend.

The match saw the Gophers go a perfect 2-0 in doubles to earn the doubles point, as well as a perfect 6-0 in singles play to complete the sweep against the Cougars. Today's match also featured Gophers senior Stefan Milicevic earning his first ranked win of the spring season, defeating BYU's Sean Hill, the No. 80 singles player in the nation according to the ITA, by a score of 6-3, 6-3.

Following this morning's win, the now 2-0 Gophers will prepare for their second match of the weekend tomorrow, a ranked battle against No. 41 Harvard University at 11:00 a.m. CST.

Doubles Competition

Minnesota was able to come away with their first doubles point of the season, thanks in large part to a 6-4 victory by Siim Troost and Vlad Lobak in the No. 1 doubles spot and a 6-1 victory by Eli Ogilvy and Jackson Allen in the No. 2 spot. The third doubles match, which featured senior Stefan Milicevic and Bodin Zarkovic, went unfinished.

Singles Competition

Following a commanding round of doubles for the Maroon & Gold, the Gophers continued to dominate the courts, winning all six of their singles matches on the day. Besides the aforementioned ranked victory for Milicevic, the Gophers saw four out of the remaining five singles matches finish as two set sweeps, as Siim Troost, Jackson Allen, Eli Ogilvy, and Bodin Zarkovic all came away with singles sweeps. Junior Vlad Lobak's match in the No. 2 singles spot was the lone third set match of the day, which saw Lobak come out on top 4-6, 6-2, 10-7.

Notable

The last 7-0 sweep for Minnesota came on February 15 of last season, when the Gophers swept Wichita State University at the Baseline Tennis Center. In their last meeting with BYU in 2014, the Maroon & Gold were also able to sweep the Cougars in both singles and doubles play.

Quotable

"Today was a solid win for us against a good BYU team," head coach Geoff Young said. "It was nice to see our doubles play well too. Tomorrow will be tough against Harvard, but I'm sure we will be ready to compete."
