BOSTON, Mass. - The University of Minnesota men's tennis team suffered their first loss of the 2020 season on Sunday after being defeated by the Harvard Crimson 6-1.
Coming off of a 7-0 sweep against BYU, the Gophers were looking to carry their momentum into their second match of the weekend. Things got off to a hot start for the Maroon & Gold, as they went undefeated on the day in doubles and earned the doubles point that put them up 1-0 heading into singles.
Minnesota fell behind early to kick off the singles round, with all six Gophers dropping their first set. The Crimson didn't let up, and would go on to sweep the Maroon & Gold in singles, clinching a 6-1 victory.
With their loss today, the Gophers now sit with an overall record of 2-1 in non-conference play, with their home opening weekend coming next Friday and Sunday against Auburn and Alabama.
Doubles Competition
While junior Vlad Lobak and freshman Siim Troost battled hard in the No. 1 singles spot for the Gophers, the No. 2 and No. 3 spots were what ended up clinching a hard fought doubles point for the Maroon & Gold. Longtime doubles partners Eli Ogilvy and Jackson Allen struck first, defeating Harvard's Walker and Sun by a score of 6-3, while the senior-freshman combo of Stefan Milicevic and Bodin Zarkovic sealed the round up for Minnesota, winning 6-2.
Singles Competition
Despite a strong start in doubles play for the Maroon & Gold, the Gophers weren't able to keep their success going into the singles round, as Harvard went on to sweep the Gophers in all six matches. In his match against Harvard's Harris Walker, who finished the 2019 fall season as the 110th-ranked singles player in the nation, Gophers junior Jackson Allen battled his way back after dropping a tight first set to even the playing field at one set each. In their third set, Allen would eventually drop the match to Walker, falling by a score of 6-7(5), 6-4, 10-0. Allen's doubles partner Eli Ogilvy also would force a third set in his singles match against Robert Wrzesinski of the Crimson, but eventually would fall 6-0, 3-6, 6-4.
Notable
Freshman Bodin Zarkovic's eight match winning streak in singles play has officially been snapped after his defeat to Harvard's Steven Sun today by a score of 6-3, 7-6(6).
Quotable
"We played good doubles today and less than aggressive tennis," Gophers head coach Geoff Young said. "Harvard is a very good team, but for us to beat them we just needed to play more aggressive."
