IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The Golden Gophers combined for 10 event titles as the University of Minnesota track & field team opened the 2021 indoor season in a head-to-head competition against Iowa at the Hawkeye Border Battle on Saturday. The men and women each earned five titles to kick off the season, including sweeping the mile, 200-meter, and 3,000-meter titles.

Alec Basten and Erin Reidy took home top honors in the men's and women's miles, respectively. Basten clocked a career-best time of 4:03.36 to move into seventh among all-time Gophers on the way to the win. Runner-up Owen Hoeft also recorded a career-best time of 4:03.54, good for eighth in program history. Meanwhile, Reidy won the women's mile in 4:59.50 in her first collegiate race.

Kion Benjamin and Amira Young won the men's and women's 200-meter titles, respectively, while Khalid Hussein and Bethany Hasz swept the 3,000-meter races. Val Larson (400 meters) and Sophie Schmitz (1,000 meters) also won their respective events as all five of the Gopher women's event titles were won on the track.

The Gopher men swept the throws behind wins from Kyle Atkinson in the shot put and Phillipe Barnett in the weight throw. Both men were victorious in their first meets in uniform for the Maroon & Gold. Atkinson posted a winning throw of 18.23m (59-09.75 ft.) in weight throw, and Barnett posted a mark of 19.65m (64-05.75 ft.) for the best shot put performance of the meet.

Quotable
"It was a great day, and we're excited to be back competing," director of track & field and cross country Matt Bingle said. "We needed this to shake off the rust so we can start getting better each week. It was a first good step for the team. We need to follow it up with a good week of practice and make sure we are staying healthy. Everyone is ready to get back to work."
