Gophers secure a near-sweep in Friday night's action
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The University of Minnesota men's tennis team defeated the Purdue Boilermakers in impressive fashion via 6-1 victory, thanks to some dominant play in singles action.
The Gophers' win will boost them to 6-4 on the season heading into Sunday afternoon's matchup with Indiana, while Purdue will fall to 1-9 on the season.
Doubles Play
The Gophers secured the doubles point in large part due to the comeback effort from the pairing of Jackson Allen and Sebastian Vile, who had a new spot in the lineup at the No. 1 doubles slot.
Allen and Vile had found themselves down 3-5 in their match, before rattling off four straight points to secure a 7-5 victory over Purdue's Milledge Cossu and Michal Wozniak.
Vlad Lobak and Bodin Zarkovic were the other Gopher winners in doubles play, securing a 6-4 victory in their first match together of the season. The pairing of Siim Troost and Daniel Martin dropped their match by a score of 6-3.
Singles Play
The Gophers dominated in singles play, winning six matches on the day. Daniel Martin started the Gophers out strong with a 6-1, 6-1, straight set victory, with Siim Troost following along with a 6-4, 6-2 win of his own.
Vlad Lobak continued the dominant run as he downed his opponent in a 6-2, 6-4 match, and Sebastian Vile answered the call as well with his own 6-4, 6-4 win. After a close first set, Dylan Heap dominated the second set for a 7-6, 6-1 match win.
Jackson Allen's match was the only blemish on the night, as he dropped a tough three-set match by a score of 6-4, 7-6, 12-10
Notable
Jackson Allen and Sebastian VIle played their first ever match in the No. 1 doubles slot in their victory Friday afternoon. They had played in 12 previous matches together in doubles play, going 8-4 in that stretch spanning over two seasons.
