The Gophers continue this weekend’s Big Ten series with Maryland on Saturday, May 1 and Sunday, May 2.
COLLEGE PARK, Md. –Chase Stanke went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs for the Gopher baseball program in a 12-4 loss to Maryland on Friday at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium. The contest opened a three-game stretch for Minnesota (4-24) against the Terrapins (17-13).
Trent Schoeberl (0-4) started for the Maroon & Gold and took the loss on the mound while Drake Davis threw four innings for the Gophers. Drew Hmielewski was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going 2.2 innings, surrendering one run on three hits, walking none and striking out three.
Offensively, the Gophers were paced by Stanke, who went 2-for-4 on the day with a home run and two RBIs. Brett Bateman furnished a noteworthy performance as well, going 1-for-3 with two walks. Jack Wassel also chipped in for Minnesota, putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding an RBI.
Trailing 4-0, the Gophers first put a run on the board in the second inning with a solo home run from Stanke. The Terrapins expanded their lead to 6-1 before the Minnesota offense got back to work, cutting into that lead in the third. Minnesota brought home a pair, with one run driven in by Stanke's single, which tightened the Terrapins lead to 6-3. Maryland built their lead to 12-3 before the Minnesota offense got going, reducing that lead to 12-4 in the ninth.
