Records Fall at M City Classic

Amira Young and Bethany Hasz improved on Minnesota program records on Friday night.
MINNEAPOLIS -- The Golden Gopher track & field team won nine events, set eight facility records, and broke two Minnesota program records on day one of the M City Classic at the University of Minnesota Track & Field Stadium on Friday.
Amira Young ran a wind-legal career best in the 200m, taking over sole possession of Minnesota's program record with a winning time of 23.21 seconds. Bethany Hasz improved on her own Gophers program record in the 5,000m by running 15.41.98 to lead the field.
The Gophers swept the 400m hurdles event crowns as Noah Burton won the men's race in a career-best 51.38 seconds, improving his time at third on Minnesota's all-time list, and Abigail Schaaffe won the women's race with a career-best time of 58.43 seconds to move into sixth among all-time Gophers. The Maroon & Gold also took home bronze in both races with Val Larson clocking a career-best time of 59.16 seconds, which ranks ninth on Minnesota's all-time list, and Collin Sieffert coming in third in the men's race in 52.62 seconds.
Owen Hoeft won the men's 1500m in 3:44.20 while Anastasia Korzenowski was the top Gopher in the women's 1500m, finishing fourth in 4:23.80.
In the throws, the Gophers were led by Kostas Zaltos and Kaleb Siekmeier, who both used career-best throws to win titles on day one of the meet. Zaltos threw 69.57m (228-03) to win men's hammer throw and move into third on Minnesota's all-time list, and Siekmeier won men's discus with a throw of 57.08m (187-03), which ranks eighth in Gopher history. The Gophers also earned runner-up finishes in both events as Carter Hughes was second in hammer (career-best 62.17m, 203-11) and Phillipe Barnett was discus runner-up (54.04m, 177-03).
On the women's side, Tess Keyzers finished as hammer throw runner-up and improved her rank among all-time Gophers with a career-best throw of 62.31m (204-05) for fifth in program history. Shelby Frank finished as women's discus runner-up with a career-best mark of 53.39m (175-02) and moved into 10th in Minnesota history as well.
Other day one field event highlights saw the Gopher take the top two spots in women's long jump as Allison Gerads recorded a winning mark of 6.19m (20-03.75) and Hannah Morris finished as runner-up with a jump of 6.08m (19-11.50). Yahya Madar won men's high jump by clearing 1.94m (6-04.25).
