Gophers Qualify 40 Entries for NCAA West Prelim

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Golden Gopher track & field program will be well-represented at the NCAA West Preliminary as the University of Minnesota has qualified 40 entries for the NCAA first round competition, which is scheduled for Wednesday, May 26 through Saturday, May 29 hosted by Texas A&M in College Station, Texas.
About the NCAA West Prelim
The NCAA West Prelim will take place at Texas A&M's E.B. Cushing Stadium Wednesday through Saturday. Men's events are scheduled for Wednesday and Friday, and women's events are scheduled for Thursday and Saturday. General admission tickets are available for the competition; general admission tickets guarantee entry to the facility, but seating is available on a first come, first served basis. The action will be live streamed via ESPN on the SEC Network+ with coverage beginning at 6 p.m. CT each day.
Gophers at the NCAA West Prelim
Minnesota has 21 entries on the women's side and 19 entries on the men's side. Both the women's and men's 4x100-meter relay and 4x400-meter relay teams qualified. In addition to the relays, the Gophers women have 19 individuals competing in 14 different individual events while the men have 17 individual entries in 10 different events.
The Gopher women have multiple entries in the 800m, 400m hurdles, 3,000m steeplechase, shot put, and discus. On the men's side, the depth of Minnesota's throws corps is on display with four qualifiers in men's hammer throw alone. The men also have multiple entries in the shot put, discus, pole vault, and 400m hurdles.
The heptathlon and decathlon are not contested at the preliminary championships,but rather qualification to the championships in these events is accomplished through a competitor's position on the national descending order list. Teddy Frid has qualified to represent the Gophers in the decathlon at the NCAA Championships.
The top 12 competitors from each individual event and 12 teams from each relay event advance to compete in the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which will be held Wednesday, June 9 through Saturday, June 12 in Eugene, Ore.
