Throwers Shine in B1G Tune-Up

Minnesota won seven events at the Wisconsin B1G Invitational on Saturday.

MADISON, Wis. -- The Golden Gophers won seven events, led by massive personal bests from Tess Keyzers and Kostas Zaltos to sweep the hammer throw titles, at the Wisconsin B1G Invitational on Saturday.

Both Keyzers and Zaltos moved into second in program history with their winning marks in the team's final meet before the Big Ten Outdoor Championships next weekend. Keyzers recorded a career-best mark of 65.70m (215-07 ft.), second only to Temi Ogunrinde's program record of 68.85m (25-10 ft.), to take home top honors in women's hammer throw. Zaltos won the men's hammer throw and set a personal best with a throw of 69.80m (229-00 ft.) to rank second behind Sean Donnelly (74.35m, 243-11 ft.) among all-time Gophers. In addition, Phillipe Barnett moved into 10th in program history with a runner-up throw of 64.62m (212-00 ft.).

Barnett also made history in men's discus with a winning throw of 59.55m (195-04 ft.). He now ranks fifth among all-time Gophers in the event. Runner-up Kaleb Siekmeier recorded a personal-best throw of 59.38m (194-10 ft.) to rank sixth in Minnesota history as well. On the women's side, Shelby Frank led the Maroon & Gold in discus, posting a career-best throw of 54.46m (178-08 ft.) to finish fourth at the meet and climb into sixth among all-time Gophers.

Kyle Atkinson also won his event and moved up Minnesota's all-time ranks. He recorded a career-best throw of 19.53m (64-01.00 ft.) to win men's shot put and rank fifth in Gophers history. On the women's side, Devia Brown won the shot put crown with a throw of 16.74m (54-11.25 ft.).

The Gophers also earned top honors in men's pole vault and women's javelin. Ekhardt Van der Watt won his first title of the year in men's pole vault by clearing 4.98m (16-04.00 ft.) while Hailey Poole threw 42.43m (139-02 ft.) to win her first women's javelin title of the season after earning a runner-up finish at the M City Classic last weekend.

The Big Ten Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships will take place Friday, May 14 through Sunday, May 16 in Champaign, Ill.
