Zaltos, Hasz Win on B1G Day One

Big Ten champions Kostas Zaltos and Bethany Hasz won their respective events on Friday.
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Big Ten Conference champions Kostas Zaltos and Bethany Hasz and B1G runner-up Tess Keyzers led the University of Minnesota on day one of the Big Ten Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Friday in Champaign, Ill.
Zaltos won the men's hammer throw competition while Hasz won the women's 10,000 meters. Keyzers earned a runner-up showing in the women's hammer throw to make up the top finishers for the Maroon & Gold on day one of the three-day B1G Championships.
Led by Zaltos's title, the Gopher men picked up 17 points in the team standings in hammer throw. Zaltos recorded a career-best throw of 69.98m (229-07 ft.) to improve his mark at second in Minnesota history and win the B1G crown. Phillipe Barnett also moved up the Gophers' all-time list with a career-best mark of 66.70m (218-10 ft.), good for seventh all-time and fourth place at the meet. Kaleb Siekmeier earned two points for the Maroon & Gold with a seventh-place throw of 60.28m (197-09 ft.) as well.
The Gopher women also had multiple scoring finishes in hammer throw as Erin Dunning placed eighth along with Keyzers' runner-up showing. Keyzers recorded a career-best mark of 65.76m (215-09 ft.) on her final attempt to improve her mark at second on Minnesota's all-time list while Dunning used a throw of 57.31m (188-00) to secure her best B1G finish of her career in eighth place.
In her first collegiate 10,000-meter race, Hasz cruised to victory to earn her third B1G crown of the year after winning the Big Ten cross country title and the Big Ten indoor 3,000-meter title earlier this season. Hasz ran a career-best time of 33:30.04, good for third in Minnesota history. Behind Hasz, Bit Klecker ran a career-best 35:09.16 to finish 15th, and Jaycie Thomsen finished 19th (35:40.59). On the men's side, Jack Manderscheid ran a time of 30:09.80 to finish 19th in his first collegiate 10,000-meter race, marking just his third race of the 2020-21 season.
Minnesota also secured 3.33 points in the team standings in men's pole vault on Friday. Ekhardt Van der Watt finished sixth, clearing a career-best height of 5.22m (17-01.50 ft.) to rank 10th in Gophers' history while Mike Herauf cleared 5.12m (16-09.50 ft.) to finish in a three-way tie for eighth place.
Through three of 21 scored events on the men's side, the Gophers are in second place in the team standings with 20.33 points behind leader Penn State (36 points). With just two of 21 events scored, the Minnesota women are tied for first place with Michigan State with 19 points each in the team race.
Day one preliminary heats saw the Maroon & Gold advance seven individuals to finals in the 400-meter hurdles, 200 meters, and 1,500 meters.
Three Gophers advanced to the 400-meter hurdles finals as Noah Burton and Collin Sieffert moved on in the men's competition and Abigail Schaaffe secured her place in the women's final. Burton ran a time of 51.63 seconds for the third-best prelim time while Sieffert clocked a career-best time of 52.04 seconds to improve on his mark at sixth on Minnesota's all-time list. Schaaffe had the second-fastest preliminary time on the women's side at 58.69 seconds.
Kion Benjamin and Amira Young both advanced to the 200-meter finals as well. Benjamin clocked the sixth-best time at 20.98 seconds while Young posted the second-best preliminary time at 23.46 seconds.
Owen Hoeft ran a career-best time of 3:42.42 in the men's 1,500 meters to automatically qualify for Sunday's final and move into seventh on Minnesota's all-time list. Eli Hoeft (3:45.33) and Hunter Lucas (3:45.70) both ran career-best times as well, finishing 13th and 15th, respectively. On the women's side, Abby Kohut-Jackson automatically qualified for Saturday's final by placing third in her heat in 4:24.62, and Libby Halbmaier ran a career-best 4:26.37 to finish 15th.
Friday's competition also included day one of the decathlon and heptathlon. Teddy Frid is in eighth place with 3,823 points through five events in the decathlon, highlighted by a fifth-place finish in high jump (1.97m, 6-05.50 ft.) and a career-best mark in shot put (12.90m, 42-04.00 ft.), while Hannah Arason is 10th place with 3,124 points with three events remaining. She tied her outdoor career best by clearing 1.71m (5-07.25 ft.) to finish second in high jump, and she also set a career best in shot put 11.27m (36-11.75 ft.).
Action continues at the B1G Outdoor Championships on Saturday and Sunday.
