Alec Basten finished as national runner-up in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase on Friday.

EUGENE, Ore. -- University of Minnesota redshirt senior Alec Basten finished as national runner-up in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase to lead the Maroon & Gold on day three of the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., on Friday.

Basten ran a career-best time of 8:29.03 to finish as NCAA runner-up. He improved his time at second on Minnesota's all-time list, where he trails only 2018 NCAA champion Obsa Ali (8:28.49). Basten's time also qualifies him for the upcoming U.S. Olympic Trials in the event.

Kaleb Siekmeier and Phillipe Barnett finished 18th and 19th, respectively, in the men's discus on Friday night as well. Siekmeier posted a mark of 54.29m (178-01 ft.) while Barnett's best throw of 53.03m (173-11 ft.) came on his third and final attempt.

As the men's team competition came to a close on Friday night, Minnesota tied for 20th in the team standings with 14 points behind eight points from Basten's runner-up finish and and six points from Kostas Zaltos's third-place showing in men's hammer throw. LSU won the men's team title with 84 points followed by team runner-up Oregon with 53 points and North Carolina A&T in third with 35 points.

The NCAA Championships conclude on Saturday with Shelby Frank (women's discus), Abby Kohut-Jackson (women's 3,000-meter steeplechase), and Bethany Hasz (women's 5,000 meters) representing the Gophers.
