Big Ten Championships Up Next for Men's Swimming and Diving
2/22/2022 1:21:00 PM | Men's Swimming & Diving
MINNEAPOLIS -- The Minnesota men's swimming and diving program starts its postseason journey this week with the 2022 Big Ten Championships, Wednesday through Saturday, in West Lafayette, Ind.
The Big Ten Championships will be streamed via BTN+, while live results can be found here and on the Meet Mobile app (subscription required).
A daily schedule, plus streaming links, ticket information and more can be found at the Big Ten's Championships Central.
The Golden Gophers are coming off a ninth-place finish last year at the Big Tens. All-time, Minnesota has won nine conference championships, including five in a seven-year span from 2001-2007.
Individually, the Gophers have fared well in recent history, claiming 14 event titles since the 2009-10 season.
Senior Max McHugh is the two-time defending champion in the 100 breast and the reigning title holder for the 200 breast. He is looking to become just the third Gopher ever to win an even three years in a row, joining Steve Jackman who did it in both the 50 and 100 free from 1961-63, as well as Todd Smolinski who won the 100 back from 2001-03.
Minnesota, which went 3-4 in duals this year and 2-4 in conference action, recorded two NCAA 'A' cuts and eight 'B' cuts during the regular season.
McHugh headlines the list of Gopher swimmers, having achieved a pair of 'A' cuts in the 100 breaststroke (50.58) and 200 breast (1:51.27), both events where he is the defending Big Ten and NCAA champion.
Freshman Bar Soloveychik has earned provisional times in three events: 200 Free (1:35.17), 500 Free (4:15.84) and 1650 Free (15:00.23).
In addition, Lucas Farrar has earned a 'B' cut in the 50 free (19.76), as has Chris Nagy in the 1650 free (15:06.03), Kaiser Neverman in the 200 fly (1:45.17), Gavin Olson in the 200 back (1:44.70) and Desmon Sachtjen in the 100 back (47.63).
On top of these swimming performances, three Gopher divers have notched scores high enough to qualify them for NCAA Diving Zones (March 7-9) in at least one event: Jake Butler, Matthew Mitchell and Ryan Phillip.
