MINNEAPOLIS - The Golden Gophers track and field program travels south to the Bryan Clay Invite in Azusa, Calif.
ABOUT THE BRYAN CLAY INVITE
The competition for the Maroon and Gold starts Thursday at 11 a.m. with the heptathlon. Also on Thursday are the men's and women's decathlon, steeplechase races and 10k races. On Friday, the day starts at 11 a.m. with the men's hammer and the continuance of the heptathlon. The day concludes with the 5k during the evening.
The meet concludes Saturday with the events beginning at noon with the men's and women's relay races and field events. The day ends at 6:45 p.m. with the pole vault and high jump.
LAST TIME OUT
The Minnesota track and field program put the finishing touches on a weekend of competition at the 44 Farms Team Invitational hosted by Texas A&M. The two teams combined for three school records and 18 personal-best performances as the Golden Gophers battled against eight other teams April 5-6 at E.B. Cushing Stadium.
Shelby Frank used a record-breaking performance in the discus Friday afternoon to set the tone for the weekend. The junior previously broke the school record in Waco, Texas, in her last competition and the mark lasted just 14 days before she topped it again, this time with a throw of 60.35m (198-0), which also set a new meet record by more than 12 feet. She now ranks No. 4 in the nation after becoming the first athlete in Gophers' history to cross the 60-meter mark.
The men followed suit in the evening Friday by breaking two records in quick succession in the long jump and 200m. After narrowly missing out on the long jump record in his last trip to Texas, Charles Godfred made no doubt Friday as he leaped 8.19m (26-10.5) to top the previous mark set by Keita Cline back in 1995 and finished second. Not long after that, Devin Augustine joined the fun for Minnesota and set a school record in the 200m as he sprinted to a second-place result of 20.37 seconds.
MINNESOTA IN THE RANKINGS
The USTFCCCA released its third rankings of the outdoor season on Monday with the Maroon and Gold being inside the top 40 on both the men's and women's side. After the Minnesota women's team reached its highest ranking in program history at No. 6 two weeks back, it dropped to No. 38 this week. The men's program rose in the rankings from No. 31 to No. 22.
GOPHERS COLLECT WEEKLY AWARDS
Minnesota collected both weekly men's B1G awards on April 10, as Devin Augustine won the Big Ten Men's Track Athlete of the Week while Charles Godfred took home Big Ten Men's Field Athlete of the Week.
Augustine put together an impressive weekend in the sprints as he set a school record in the 200m Friday, posting a second-place result of 20.37 seconds. That was the sixth-fastest time in the NCAA this spring and topped the school record by 0.7 seconds. He followed up that performance by nearly breaking another record Saturday in the 100m. The junior won the race with a personal-best time of 10.08 seconds, just 0.01 off the Gophers' all-time mark, and was the top time by anyone in the Big Ten Conference this season.
Godfred continues to shine in his freshman campaign and broke a 29-year-old school record in the long jump by nearly three full inches Friday at the 44 Farms Team Invitational at Texas A&M. The native of Nigeria leaped 8.19m (26-10.5) to place second in the event with the nation's second-best jump of the year.
