'U' sees 18 personal bests at Texas A&M

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Minnesota track and field program put the finishing touches on a weekend of competition at the 44 Farms Team Invitational hosted by Texas A&M. The two teams combined for three school records and 18 personal-best performances as the Golden Gophers battled against eight other teams April 5-6 at E.B. Cushing Stadium.

Shelby Frank used a record-breaking performance in the discus Friday afternoon to set the tone for the weekend. The junior previously broke the school record in Waco, Texas, in her last competition and the mark lasted just 14 days before she topped it again, this time with a throw of 60.35m (198-0), which also set a new meet record by more than 12 feet. She now ranks No. 4 in the nation after becoming the first athlete in Gophers' history to cross the 60-meter mark.

The men followed suit in the evening Friday by breaking two records in quick succession in the long jump and 200m. After narrowly missing out on the long jump record in his last trip to Texas, Charles Godfred made no doubt Friday as he leaped 8.19m (26-10.5) to top the previous mark set by Keita Cline back in 1995 and finished second. Not long after that, Devin Augustine joined the fun for Minnesota and set a school record in the 200m as he sprinted to a second-place result of 20.37 seconds.

In the pole vault, the Gophers got a combined three top-six efforts Friday. Jak Urlacher finished fourth for the men with a vault of 5.28m (17-3.75). Sofia Condon tied for second in the women's pole vault as she cleared 4.07m (13-4.25), the ninth-best mark in school history, and was joined near the top as Lexy Berger posted her best jump at 3.80m (12-5.5), placing sixth.

Minnesota's long jump crew on the women's side combined for three top-10 performances Friday, led by Alliyah McNeil and her jump of 6.06m (19-10.75) to place third. Diarra Sow and Brooke Moore secured fifth and 10th-place efforts, respectively, before improving on those outings in Saturday's triple jump. Sow placed second in the triple jump and her mark of 13.28m (43-7) was the third best in program history, while Moore finished fifth behind a leap of 12.64m (41-5.75).

The women's throwers picked up where they left off the day before as Anthonett Nabwe and Frank went first and second, respectively, among NCAA competitors in the hammer throw Saturday. Nabwe put down a mark of 55.33m (181-6) and Frank went 54.82m (179-10). The day wasn't over for Nabwe as the redshirt freshman claimed another event title, winning the shot put behind a throw of 15.47m (50-9.25), setting a lifetime best in both events. That came moments after the men kept the victories going when Angelos Mantzouranis launched the hammer 70.56m (231-6) to set a meet record and Carter Hughes added a fifth-place result in the hammer throw at 59.40m (194-10).

The Maroon and Gold opened Saturday's track events with an event title in the women's 4x100 relay behind a winning time of 45.39 seconds. The women's sprinters continued to shine as Odell Frye and Victory Godah raced to third and eighth, respectively, in the 100m and each set a personal best with their efforts. Frye's time of 11.34 seconds moved her up to third on the program's all-time performance list, while Godah crossed the finish line in 11.55 seconds to match her fastest time, which remains seventh all-time.

The Gophers did something similar on the men's side of the 100m when Augustine tacked on his second event win of the weekend, turning in a time of 10.08 seconds to improve his already No. 2 time in school history. Godfred was not far behind his teammate and placed 10th overall as his time of 10.32 seconds was the fifth best all-time for the Maroon and Gold.

The weekend closed with the women's 4x400 relay placing second in 3:39.89 before the men finished fourth in a time of 3:15.39.

Minnesota also sent several student-athletes to the Hamline Invitational Saturday and all seven competitors turned in top-seven results. Freshman Hadley Streit won the women's hammer throw with a mark of 54.69m (179-5), while on the men's side, fellow freshman Finn McCormick claimed the top spot in the 3000m steeplechase as he raced to a win in 9:01.39.

The Gophers continue the outdoor season April 11-13 in Azusa, Calif., at the Bryan Clay Invite hosted by Azusa Pacific.
