The Gophers are back on the road in Iowa City, Iowa, for a two-day meet on Friday and Saturday.
MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota track & field team is back in action this weekend, traveling to Iowa City, Iowa, for the Hawkeye B1G Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
About the Hawkeye B1G Invitational
Action begins Friday at 1 p.m. CT with men's and women's high jump kicking off the meet. Saturday's competition begins with men's pole vault at 12 p.m. CT. Minnesota is set to face B1G competition from Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Nebraska, Purdue, and Wisconsin.
Last Time Out
Amira Young led the Gophers with wins in both the 60m and 200m as Minnesota took home seven event titles at the Husker Quad last weekend. Young joined Janielle Josephs (400m), Abigail Schaaffe (600m), and Grant Fuller (600m) in winning titles on the track for Minnesota. In the field events, Devia Brown (shot put) and Tess Keyzers (weight throw).
2020-21 B1GXC Championships RewindÂ
Bethany Hasz won the 2020-21 Big Ten Women's Cross Country Championships individual crown to lead the Gopher women to a runner-up team finish at the B1G meet last weekend. Abby Kohut-Jackson joined B. Hasz in earning All-Big Ten accolades, landing on the All-B1GSecond Team with an eighth-place individual finish. The women's team scored 76 points behind B1G team champion Michigan State with 48 points. It marked the second time the Gopher women have finished as B1G runner-up in the past four seasons. On the men's side, the Gophers finished seventh in the team standings led by top-20 individual finishes from Alec Basten (17th) and Jordan MacIntosh (20th). In addition, Allison Gerads led the Gophers as pentathlon runner-up at the Illini B1G Multi-Meet on Saturday.
Weekly Awards
The Gophers have secured four weekly awards this season as Bethany Hasz and Alec Basten were honored for their performances at the season-opening Hawkeye Border Battle. Hasz was named both the USTFCCCA National Track Athlete of the Week and Big Ten Conference Track Athlete of the Week following her performance in the 3,000 meters while Basten was named B1G Co-Track Athlete of the Week after clocking a career-best 4:03.36 mile at the Hawkeye Border Battle to move into eighth in Gophers' history. Most recently, Amira Young was named B1G Co-Track Athlete of the Week after winning the 60m and the 200m at the Husker Quad and improving on her own Minnesota program record in the 200m.
Hasz Makes History
Bethany Hasz became just the second Gopher in program history to win a B1G women's cross country title, joining Eileen Donaghy, who won in 1987. B. Hasz's career-best time of 20:13.2 was the second fastest time ever by a Gopher at the Big Ten Championships, and her PR moved her up one place on Minnesota's all-time list where she now ranks third among all-time Gophers, behind only Stephanie Price (19:55.50) and Megan Duwell (20:06.90) for 6K.
Pentathlon History
Allison Gerads scored a career-best 3,827 points on the way to a runner-up showing at the Illini B1G Multi-Meet; she also climbed to sixth on Minnesota's all-time top-10 list for the pentathlon with her career-best score. Gerads finished second in both long jump (5.65m) and high jump (1.67m) and placed third in shot put (11.86m). She was seventh in the 60m hurdles (9.10) and closed out the competition with a career-best time of 2:27.54 in the 800m to secure her overall pentathlon runner-up showing at the meet.
All-Time Top-10 Debuts
Three Gophers debuted on Minnesota's all-time top-10 lists at the Larry Wieczorek Invitational. Tiera Robinson-Jones made her triple jump debut for the Maroon & Gold with a runner-up showing at the meet, posting a mark of 12.19m (40-00.00 ft.), good for 10th in program history. Likewise, Lexy Berger cleared 3.95m (12-11.50 ft.) to finish as pole vault runner-up and also moved into 10th among all-time Gophers. On the track, Abigail Schaaffe debuted at sixth on Minnesota's all-time top-10 list for 600 meters with a time of 1:30.99. Schaaffe has since climbed to fifth in program history with a time of 1:29.32 at the Husker Quad.
Program-Best Sprints
Amira Young has improved on her own Minnesota indoor program record in the 200 meters twice this season, clocking a career-best time of 23.61 seconds at the Husker Triangular and then running 23.42 at the Husker Quad. Fellow sprinter Kion Benjamin moved up Minnesota's all-time ranks in the 60 meters with his career-best time of 6.73 (6.725) at the Husker Triangular as well; he climbed from 10th to fifth on the Gophers' all-time list.
All-Time Top-10 Miles
Alec Basten and Owen Hoeft both clocked all-time top-10 mile times with PRs at the Hawkeye Border Battle. Basten ran 4:03.36 for eighth among all-time Gophers while Hoeft was runner-up in 4:03.54 for ninth in program history.

On the women's side, Sam Baer, Abby Kohut-Jackson, Tate Sweeney, and Jaycie Thomsen are this year's team captains while Alec Basten and Owen Hoeft lead the men's cross country team as co-captains.Â
