Gerads Wins B1G Pentathlon

Allison Gerads led the Gophers on day two of three at the Big Ten Indoor Track & Field Championships on Friday.
GENEVA, Ohio -- Allison Gerads won the pentathlon to lead the Golden Gopher track & field team on day two at the 2021 Big Ten Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships on Friday at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
Gerads scored a career-best 4,088 points on the way to Minnesota's fourth B1G title of the meet. She tied for first in pentathlon high jump (career-best 1.73m, 5-08.00 ft.) and won pentathlon long jump (5.81m, 19-00.75 ft.) a day after placing third in the open long jump competition. Gerads' performance also included a third-place finish in pentathlon shot put (career-best 13.03m, 42-09.00), sixth place in the 60-meter hurdles (career-best 8.91), and sixth in the 800 meters (career-best 2:25.72).
Gerads' pentathlon win marks the seventh Big Ten pentathlon title in program history and the first since Jess (Herauf) Lehman won back-to-back titles in 2015 and 2016. Liz Roehrig also won four-straight B1G pentathlon titles for the Maroon & Gold from 2005 to 2008.
Women's Day Two Recap
In addition to 10 points from Gerads' pentathlon title, the Gopher women picked up three more points in the team standings to wrap up day two with 50 points to lead the team race with 12 events remaining on Saturday.
Hannah Arason recorded two points for the team with a seventh-place finish in the pentathlon with a season-best 3,569 points while Tiera Robinson-Jones scored one point with an eighth-place showing in triple jump. In her B1G debut, the freshman recorded a career-best mark of 12.23m (40-01.50 ft.) to move into ninth in program history.
Thursday's preliminary competition saw seven Gophers punch their tickets to Saturday's event finals on the women's side.
Amira Young (7.31) and Akilah Lewis (7.39) both advanced to the 60-meter final with the top two preliminary times. Lewis's career-best time of 7.39 moved her into fourth among all-time Gophers in the event as well. Meanwhile, Lexi Romero came in 10th in a career-best 7.51 seconds.
In her B1G debut, freshman Erin Reidy (career-best 2:08.99) joined Molly Roach (career-best 2:09.68) in advancing to the B1G 800-meter final. Janielle Josephs (400 meters), Abby Kohut-Jackson (mile), and Anastasia Korzenowski (mile) also moved on to finals in their respective events.
Men's Day Two Recap
On day two at the B1G Championships, the Gopher men advanced four individuals to Saturday's event finals. Entering the final day of competition, the men are in third place in the team standings with 25 points.Â
Owen Hoeft, Jordan MacIntosh, and Eli Hoeft all advanced to the mile final. O. Hoeft led the field with a career-best time of 4:01.90, good for fifth in Minnesota history, while MacIntosh posted a career-best time of 4:03.98. E. Hoeft ran 4:22.73, advancing as the second-finisher in his heat. Hunter Lucas clocked a career-best time of 4:05.89 for 11th place overall as well.Â
Kion Benjamin moved on to the 60-meter final with a preliminary time of 6.76 seconds.Â
In Friday's lone event final for the Gopher men, Wyatt Lubarski wrapped up his B1G debut with a 12th-place showing in the heptathlon with 4,206 points.
