MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota posted six different program top 10 times competing at the LSU Alumni Gold in Baton Rouge and the Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville on Friday and Saturday. All six of the top 10 times and performances came from the men's track and field team that entered the weekend ranked No. 22 in the nation.
The highlight of the weekend was Minnesota's 4x100m relay team that dropped another school record performance in a time of 39.15. The team composed of Carlon Hosten, Kion Benjamin, Finn Schirmer and Devin Augustine have now posted a school record performance twice this season. The time goes down as the No. 9 time in the NCAA this season and the No. 2 time in the Big Ten. It's also just the fifth time in program history that a Gopher 4x100m relay team has ran quicker than 40.00.
Also posting a school record once again was breakout first-year Gopher Michael Buchanan. The Iowa Western Community College transfer posted a 13.75 in the 110m hurdles to break his own school record for the third time this season. The time ranks Buchanan fourth in the Big Ten this season and tied for 17th in the NCAA West region. Finn Schirmer paired his school record 4x100m relay performance with the eighth-fastest 110m hurdles time in school history in a time of 14.28. The performance for Schirmer places him inside the program's top 10 list in the event for the first time in his career and ranks him 14th in the conference this season.
Two different Gophers posted the third-fastest times in program history with the first being Eli Hoeft in the 1500m at the Virginia Challenge. Hoeft posted a massive lifetime best in the event by over two seconds to clock his 3:40.42 time in Charlottesville. In the process Hoeft passed both older brother Owen Hoeft (3:42.01, 2022) and his father Carson Hoeft (3:41.99, 1990) on Minnesota's all-time top 10 list in the event. Hoeft's time also catapults him to the No. 5 spot in the Big Ten this season and 16th in the NCAA West region.
Carlon Hosten also dropped the third-best time in program history with his coming in the 200m. Like his teammate Schirmer, Hosten paired his school record day with a great individual performance with a 20.72 in the 200m to push him to the No. 3 time in Minnesota history. Hosten now sits at No. 3 on both the 100m and 200m lists at Minnesota. Both the 100m and 200m lists at Minnesota are all on the Maroon and Gold's current roster (Hosten, Benjamin, Augustine).
The 'U' got one top-10 mark in the field with Jake Kubiatowicz dropping a lifetime best in the men's hammer throw. The graduate student launched a mark of 66.64m (218-7) to finish third overall in the event. It places Kubiatowicz at the No. 8 spot in Minnesota history and pushes him to the No. 4 spot in the Big Ten this year. Kubiatowicz paired his day in the hammer throw with a his second-best toss in the discus at 56.44m to place third in Baton Rouge and keeps him at the No. 5 spot in the Big Ten this season.
