Gophers Post 16 Victories at Running on Hope Invitational

4/26/2023 9:17:00 PM | Men's Track & Field, Women's Track & Field

MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota captured 16 titles at the first Running on Hope Invitational hosted at the University of Minnesota Track and Field Stadium on Wednesday. Six of the victories were by unattached Gophers with the rest being won by Gophers using their outdoor eligibility.

The Maroon and Gold posted a number of season bests and facility records on Wednesday with Kostas Zaltos being the most impressive in regards to national rankings. The redshirt junior won the men's hammer throw with a facility record of 72.49m (237-10) to break his own record he posted last year at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships.

Winning the women's hammer throw unattached was Shelby Frank, who also posted a facility record of 65.77m in the event that had stood since April 30, 2021, by Gopher great Temi Ogunrinde (65.22m). Frank also was the victor in the women's discus with a strong mark of 54.61m (179-2), taking down the rest of the field by nearly 15 feet.

Both Noah Kohut-Jackson (1500m) and Odell Frye (100m) posted season-best performances in their respective events. For Kohut-Jackson, his 3:50.64 is the second-fastest time by a Gopher in that event this season. For Frye, her 11.57 edged her 11.58 season-best time she had posted earlier this year.

Other notable unattached victories for the Golden Gophers included true freshman Zoie Dundon in the 3000m steeplechase, posting a personal best time of 10:47.69. Lexy Berger was the winner in the women's pole vault with a vault of 4.06m (13-3 3/4) while Brooke Moore claimed the title in the women's triple jump with a leap of 12.24m (40-2).

Minnesota also earned victories in the men's shot put (Isaiah Schafer, 18.78m | 61-7 1/2), the men's javelin (Austin Parsons, 63.65m | 208-10), the men's discus (Jake Kubiatowicz, 55.13m | 180-10), the men's 800m (Seth Eliason, 1:52.15), the women's 200m (Lauren Hansen, 23.97), the women's 400m hurdles (Dyandra Gray, 1:01.06), the men's 110m hurdles (Michael Buchanan, 14.41) and the women's 100m hurdles (Zariyah Black, 13.78).

Minnesota continues its final week of the regular season from April 27-29 at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa.
