5/19/2024 1:30:00 PM | Rowing
Highest team finish since 2015
BARABOO, Wis. - The University of Minnesota rowing team turned in a fifth-place finish Sunday during the 2024 Big Ten Conference Championships at Devil's Lake State Park in Baraboo, Wis.
It was the highest finish for the Golden Gophers since also finishing fifth during the 2015 league championships and tied for the best result dating back to 2008 when the team placed fourth.
Racing on Devil's Lake, the Maroon and Gold were led by the third eight boat as the novice crew reached the podium and earned a bronze medal. Closing the day, the first eight boat covered the 2,000-meter course in fifth place as it held off border rivals Wisconsin and Iowa to help the team tally 36 valuable points for the standings.
Minnesota's opening race delivered a fourth-place finish as the fourth eights put together a consistent effort and the novice crew improved on their No. 8 seed to pick up five team points. Thanks to a strong push through the final 500 meters, the third eights boat edged out Rutgers by one second to earn a third-place result and 12 team points.
When the regatta flipped over to the fours, the Maroon and Gold tallied 10 team points over three races as the third eights finished eighth before the second eights went out in sixth place. The first fours closed that section of the competition by recording an eighth-place effort. In the penultimate race, the second eights put together a quality day and pushed to finish fifth.
At the end of the championships, Minnesota's Isabella Bejaran and Manon Field were honored on the All-Big Ten First and Second Team, respectively, for their performances. Tallulah Sweet was given the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award.
