1V8+ boat claims dominant race win
SARASOTA, Fla. - After combining for 14 races across two sessions Friday, the University of Minnesota rowing team finished day one of the 2024 Big Ten Invitational Regatta from Nathan Benderson Park. The Golden Gophers' first varsity eight crew headlined the action with a victory during the morning session.
It was a photo finish in the first action of the morning as the Hawkeyes edged the Maroon and Gold by less than a half second in the second varsity four race. As they've done all season, it was the Gophers first varsity eight boat that put together a dominating performance as they powered through the second half of the race to win by more than two seconds over rival Iowa.
The first race of the afternoon session came down to the wire as Minnesota's third varsity eight crew battled Alabama throughout the entire 2,000 meters before the Crimson Tide held off a late surge to win by one second. For the second time during the day, the first varsity eight boat had another impressive effort, placing third behind two of the top 13 programs in the nation.
A total of 18 schools competed in the regatta, featuring all eight from the Big Ten Conference, who took part in 48 races throughout the day at the world-class facility.
