Gophers Open Freeman Invite, Win Medals at Nationals

Highlighted by Brooke Zeiger's school record and win at AT&T Winter Nationals in Atlanta, Ga., Minnesota turned in numerous personal-record performances at two separate meets on Friday. The Gophers opened the two-day Jean K. Freeman Invitational at home in Minneapolis.

Both meets will continue Saturday, with Winter Nationals prelims at 8 a.m. and Freeman prelims at 10 a.m. Finals for Winter Nationals will start at 4 p.m. and Freeman Invite finals will start at 6 p.m.

AT&T WINTER NATIONALS - Results

MEN
The Gophers' 200 free relay finished second in 1:18.87, 0.12 off of first. Bowe Becker led off the relay in 19.56, 0.03 away from his personal record. Paul Fair, Hunter Doerr and Daryl Turner also earned silver.

Turner picked up a bronze medal in the 100 butterfly, clocking in at 46.53. Tuomas Pokkinen placed sixth in 47.53.

John Bushman was fourth in the 400 IM with a time of 3:48.87. Michael Messner's 3:55.17 placed sixth in the B final.

Conner McHugh grabbed a fourth-place finish in the 100 breast in 53.23. Eric Sande was second in the B final in 54.01.

Fair placed sixth in the 200 free in a personal-record 1:35.89, and Turner was eighth in the 100 back in 47.99. A Gopher swam the C final of each of those events, with Redondo seventh in the 200 free and Busch sixth in the 100 back.

WOMEN
Brooke Zeiger lowered her own school record in the 400-yard individual medley, winning in 4:02.71. She was 3.39 ahead of Ohio State's Lindsey Clary. Zeiger's time is one of the best in the country this year and automatically qualifies her for the NCAA Championships. Breanne Siwicki joined her in the A final and finished sixth in 4:11.66.

The Gophers' 200 free relay of Danielle Nack, Zoe Avestruz, Lindsey Horejsi and Tevyn Waddell turned in a silver finish. Minnesota won its heat in 1:31.02. Nack's leadoff split was 22.54.

Horejsi placed fourth in the 100 breaststroke in 59.41. Rae Bullinger was sixth in the B final in 1:02.01.

Nack was fifth in the 100 butterfly in 52.84. Waddell placed fourth in the B final in 53.83.

Waddell also swam the 100 back, finishing fifth in 53.13. Avestruz was eighth in 54.05, and Katelyn Holmquist swam a personal-record 54.51 for sixth in the B final.

Erin Emery was fifth in the 200 free B final in 1:47.93.

JEAN K. FREEMAN INVITATIONAL - Results

MEN
Matt Barnard scored 441.68 on the 3-meter diving board for a dominant victory. Alan LeBlang was second at 377.05, his best 3-meter score as a Gopher, and Jeremy Moser (290.60) was fifth.

Nick Plachinski (personal-record 4:25.00) and Justin Torres (4:33.39) claimed the top two spots in the 500 free. Brian Poon (1:48.17) and Jonathon Thielen (1:49.94) did the same in the 200 IM.

In three different races, the Gophers claimed the top three finishes. Nick Saulnier (personal-record 1:47.36), Jack Tribble (1:48.03) and Tyler Klatt (1:48.69) finished 1-2-3 in the 200 back. Gophers also took the top three spots in the 200 fly with Nick Orf (1:47.99), Matthew Thomas (1:48.29) and Garner Kohrell (1:49.76) finishing in order. Erick Huft (personal-record 1:38.60) led Plachinski (1:40.30) and Simon Meier (1:40.92) in the 200 free.

James Tidd won the 50 free in 20.50, with David Goll (20.97) in third. Brenner Hohenstein (55.41) won the 100 breast, with teammate Matt Zugibe (56.77) in fourth.

The Gophers finished first in both relays. Bryce Boston, Goll, Erick Huft and Tidd won the 200 free relay in 1:22.03. Parker Lemke, Hohenstein, Orf and Jan Hansen won the 400 medley relay in 3:20.92

WOMEN
Minnesota scored two diving wins. Yu Zhou scored 349.70 to win 1-meter ahead of teammates Sarah Bacon (326.50) and Beth Etterman (267.30). Lexi Tenenbaum won platform with a score of 322.50. Morgan Justus was third (240.65).

Chantal Nack won two races with personal records. She won the 200 back in 1:55.43. Erin Buck was second in 2:00.51. Nack posted a 1:48.06 for first in the 200 free. Grobe (1:50.07) was second.

Madison Preiss (personal-record 2:00.85), Dani Bergeson (2:02.19) and Maggie Werba (2:06.75) went 1-2-3 in the 200 IM.

Kaia Grobe (23.37) won the 50 free, with Tara Chapman in fourth (23.86). Rina Krupsky won the 200 fly in a personal-best 2:00.68.

The Gophers won both relays. The 200 free relay of Bergeson, Grobe, Abigail Raatz and Chapman turned in a 1:32.74. The 400 medley relay of Buck, Katelyn Sauder, Allison Schumacher and Raatz posted a 3:48.46.

Isabel Whited (4:55.31) and Lauren Lalumiere (4:57.14) took second and third in the 500 free. Preiss (1:02.39), Chapman (1:02.89) and Nicki Ciavarella (1:03.79) took the second through fourth spots in the 100 breast.
